What is chronic neck pain, and what causes it?

Most neck pain cases last between two and six weeks; however, anything longer than this can be considered chronic neck pain. What causes neck pain? Neck pain is ultimately caused when there are any abnormalities, injuries or inflammations in the bones, ligaments or muscles that support your neck and head.

Continue reading below for our list of the most common causes of chronic neck pain!

Muscle Tension and Strain

Neck pain or stiffness can be caused by strains and muscle tension in your neck area. This is usually caused by bad habits such as poor posture, sleeping in a bad position, jerking your neck during exercise or from working a desk job and not regularly changing your head position.

Injury

Another common cause for chronic neck pain is injury, whether that be from a car accident, a bad fall or from sports. When your neck is suddenly jerked around or is forced to move outside of its normal range, a neck injury is a likely result.

Heart Attack

If you have sudden neck pain, this can actually be a sign of a heart attack. Keep in mind that this type of pain will also be presented with other symptoms of a heart attack, such as shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, vomiting and arm/jaw pain.

If this is the case for your neck pain, call an ambulance or have a loved one drive you to the emergency room ASAP.

Meningitis

Meningitis, which is essentially an inflammation of the tissue that surrounds your brain and spinal cord, is another common cause for neck pain. Those who suffer from this usually also have a fever and headache with their stiff necks.

If this is the case for your neck pain, immediately seek the professional help of your doctor.

Other Causes

A few other causes of neck pain that we haven’t listed above can include some of the following medical conditions:

  • Osteoporosis.
  • Cervical osteoarthritis.
  • Cervical foraminal stenosis.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Cervical degenerative disc disease.
  • Cervical herniated disc.
  • Spinal stenosis.
  • Cervical stenosis with myelopathy.

In absolute rare conditions, your neck pain might be related to cancer, a tumor, congenital abnormalities, abscesses or an infection.

See your doctor to learn more about what might be causing your neck pain if you believe it to be related to any of the issues we listed in this section.
